  1. Avoid political demonstrations and large political gathering. Political demonstrations and large gatherings can be unpredictable and can turn violent. It's best to avoid these events altogether.
  2. Be careful when taking photos. It's illegal to photograph or video inside military sites, government buildings, and other sensitive areas. Be sure to ask permission before taking photos in public places.
  3. Carry your passport and other important documents with you at all times. This will help you to identify yourself to authorities if you need to.
  4. Be aware of your belongings. Petty theft is common in Sri Lanka, so it is important to be careful with your belongings. Do not leave your bags unattended, and keep your valuables close to you at all times.


In addition to these general safety tips, there are a few other things you can do to stay safe in Sri Lanka: 

  • Book your accommodation through a reputable source.
  • Only use licensed taxis such as Uber / Pickme or Metered taxies. (Ask the driver is that a metered taxi before you start your journey.)
  • Drink bottled water and avoid eating street food if it looks not healthy.
  • Take out travel insurance if possible. (Not a must)
